School Psychologists assess the academic and other intellectual abilities of students, as well as offer assistance with social, emotional, or academic problems.
In the 2005-2006 school year, the ESC School Psychology team completed 218 evaluations throughout the county. 152 of those were reevaluations, and of the 66 initials completed, 37 qualified for SLD, 10 for CD, 4 for OHI, and 2 for Autism. In addition, the staff evaluated 6 students who did not qualify for any federal programs, completed 6 pre-school evaluations, and was involved with multiple Intervention Assistance Teams that resolved concerns without testing.
For the 2007-2008 school year, the AMESC School Psychology Department consists of the following team members:
Supervising Psychologist, Beth Amoriya, is assigned to work with the staffs of Meigs Elementary and Carleton School.
Beth moved to Meigs County 26 years ago from the Cleveland area. She was the School Psychologist for Gallia County Schools through the 80’s and worked at a Community Mental Health Center with children and families for 10 years before joining the ESC in 2002. She is an Ohio Licensed School Psychologist.
Psychologist Pam O’Brien is assigned to the Meigs Middle School and Meigs High School.
Pam was born and raised in Pomeroy, and after living away for 33 years, has moved back to the area. Pam has worked with children as a special education teacher, school counselor, and finally, school psychologist. Pam has a master’s degree in education and permanent certification in special education and counseling. She is an Ohio Licensed School Psychologist.
Psychologist Carolee Richards works with the staffs of Eastern and Southern Local School Districts.
Carolee received her BS degree in Psychology from the University of Rio Grande in 1996 after which she worked as a Psychometrician for Personal Growth and Development Services in Pt. Pleasant. Having served the Athens-Meigs ESC for 8 years as the Educational Diagnostician, Carolee returned to the psychology staff during the 2006-2007 school year as a School Psychology Intern. She graduated from the Marshall University Graduate College in May 2007 with an Ed.S. in School Psychology and an MA in Elementary Education. This year she is assigned to Southern and Eastern Local School Districts as a School Psychologist.
Psychology Assistant, Cathy Lentes, assists with reevaluations and conducts academic conducts achievement testing for Eastern Local School District, Meigs Middle School and Meigs High School.
Cathy is a graduate of Miami University and a former kindergarten/first Grade teacher. As a published writer and advocate for the arts, she has worked with learners from pre-school through college. Cathy has been active in creative programming at schools, libraries, and other community settings throughout southeast Ohio for nearly 20 years.
Psychological Assistant, Abby Harris, assists with reevaluations and conducts achievement testing for Southern Local School District and Meigs Elementary School.
Abby is a lifelong resident of Middleport and a Meigs High School graduate. After high school she attended Marshall University, where she received a Bachelors Degree in Counseling. Following her graduation from Marshall University, she worked for the Meigs Primary School as an Intervention Teacher and before being hired by the AMESC. Abby plans to continue her education by returning to Marshall to pursue a Masters Degree.
